Week 1 (23.09.2025)

Lecture Title: Principles of Game Design

Lecture Details:

  1. Introduction to Game Design
  2. Core principles of Game Design
  3. Challenges in Game Design

Applications of Knowledge on The Game of Life (Board Game)

2.1 Player Experience

The game is adventure which are discovery and explorative which there were rules to be explored before starting the game.

Besides, the game is simulative as it simulate the whole life of a person from college, getting to work, getting married, having babies until retirement.

The social part of the game is showed in this game by the competition between players where players are meant to compete to decide the winner, which is the person who has the most money retired.

2.2 Gameplay Mechanics & Storytelling

The primary mechanics of the game is by wheel spinning to decide the movement of each players. The secondary mechanics is showed in resource management, where players should manage their money and assets. Feedback loops are showed with positive feedback such as money rewards reached certain place while negative feedback is vice versa where money would be lost.

Storytelling principle is applied while the progressing of game which players' choices and movements would lead to different life, along the game, some may getting children, some may lose jobs while some may buy houses

2.3 Challenge and Enhancements

The main challenge of this game is to understand the rules, because there were special rules applied too.

In my opinion, to enhance the game, the special rules towards occupations could be reduced into categories and make the rules simpler. For example, the entertainer occupation had the special rules with long description, however, to make it simpler, the rules can be simplified to "When the wheel spinning occurred to have two continuous same number, the entertainer could gain $10000".

Week 2 (30.09.2025)

Lecture Title: Balancing Fun and Educational Elements in Game Design

Lecture Details:

  1. Introduction to Fun and Education
  2. Strategies for Fun & Edu Balance

Applications of Knowledge

We have applied the lecture content when we were brainstorming for our game content, which we will be adding some educational elements in our game project.

Week 3 (07.10.2025)

Play Week

Since it is play week, we organised to visit a board game cafĂ© on 09/10 at 7pm called Meeples located at SS15.

1.1 The Malaysian Dream

Gameplay Mechanisms

1. Every player got a character at the start of the game.
2. Each round a player can draw 2 cards and make 3 actions.
3. The game ended when all dream cards are drawn.

Personal Experience

I think this game is especially suits Malaysian to play it because the cards are related to Malaysia and has strong Malaysian culture such as having the character "Raja Bomoh", action cards like "Found parking space at 1 Utama" or "Reflect Myvi High Beam".

If to say the enhancements can be made, I would say is to make some action cards more achievable because I think there are cards like doing action and post on Instagram where I think board game should be only on board but not involving other stuffs.

1.2 Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza

Gameplay Mechanisms

  1. Every player got specific number of cards at the start of the game, and the cards are facing down.
  2. Each player draws own deck of cards and shouting according to the sequence "Taco Cat Goat Cheese Pizza".
  3. If the card's name is same as what players shouted out, all players must put their palms on the card, the last player to do so will keep all the remaining cards.
  4. The player who drew all own pile of cards win.

Personal Experience

Since it is similar to slapjack where I used to play, it didn’t require much time to understand the rules. However, it stimulated my brain that I think it can only play once or else I cannot afford. Also, there are 3 extra cards "Narwhal", "Gorilla" and "Groundhog" added some fun on top the slapjack game.

1.3 Wits and Wagers

Gameplay Mechanisms
  1. Draw a quiz card and speak one of the question out of two out loud.
  2. Each player writes answer and place bet on the answers.
  3. The answer that has smallest gap with the correct answer wins.
Personal Experience

I would not say it is card game that suits Malaysian due to the American units used which is different with the British units used by us. Out of all the game we played, I would say this is the game I had less interest.

1.4 Deception: Murder in Hong Kong

Gameplay Mechanisms
  1. 3 roles which are Murderer, Forensic Scientist and Investigator.
  2. Murderer choose the cards used to murder, Forensic Scientist gives clue based on the cards chosen while investigator would guess who is the murderer.
Personal Experience

This game is easy to play but it is surprisingly fun because investigator has to guess, forensic scientist can make out a story while murderer has to hide the identity. I like this game because all 3 roles had their own fun points and none will be left out, and we had interesting guess and imagination on the murder.

1.5 Water (Shashawa)

Gameplay Mechanisms
  1. Player should collect same set of animal cards and shout "Water", then all the players grab water card.
  2. The one who didn’t get water token get drought token, having 3 drought token will be eliminated.
Personal Experience

This game is fast pace because we are basically changing cards with others, and it is very easy because it is just about speed.

Week 4 (14.10.2025)

Lecture Title: Playtesting & Iterative Design

For this week of lecture, we discussed the gameplay mechanics of our game and had feedback from the lecturer. We also tried playing for one round and it turns out that we had to enhance a few details to make it more playable.

Week 5 (21.10.2025)

This week is self-directed and we have updated our weekly progress and project progress to lecturer and we refined our game by playtesting. Besides, we also finalise our slides and assigned tasks to each members for next week's presentation.

Week 6 (28.10.2025)

We had proposal presentation this week on class and we had received feedback from lecturer, and we will refined our game and cards according to the feedback received.

Week 7 (04.11.2025)

This week, we had playtest on our game. We first played our game with Group 4 and then playtest on their game. We figured several enhancements needed when looking them playing and would fix it and try again next week. We then played their game, and I think it is fun to try on different types of game, where their game is scenario-based WereWolves game which is quite interesting. I even won one round as the spy, though it is quite hard but fun while trying to keep my identity as good person.

Week 8 (11.11.2025)

This week, instead of having game test with other groups, we enhanced the game and played among ourselves. The progress is updated in Project Update.

Remaining Weeks

These several weeks we are having play test and receiving feedback or review from players, we also tried to enhance our game based on the feedback.
